Horse Chestnut Extract
General Information
Horse chestnut extract is derived from the seeds of Aesculus hippocastanum, a common herbaceous plant. It contains a range of bioactive compounds including flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins and essential oils. The primary active constituents are aesculin and escin, which belong to the flavonoid group. These polyphenols possess potent antioxidant effects that help neutralize damaging free radicals produced during plant metabolism. Horse chestnut exhibits antimicrobial properties as well, protecting plants against infections by pathogenic bacteria, fungi and oomycetes. Regular foliar sprays of this botanical extract have been shown to alleviate biotic and abiotic stresses in crops. The anti-inflammatory action of horse chestnut extract relieves environmental stress-induced damage in plants exposed to UV radiation, drought, salinity and extreme temperatures.
