Thoughts About Climate Change And How To Deal With It

From 2015 to 2023, China's total avocado import and export trade witnessed a remarkable increase of 49,600 tons, which is approximately a 310.47% growth. In 2023, China imported avocados from nine countries and regions, including Peru, Chile, Kenya, Mexico, New Zealand, the Philippines, Colombia, the United States, and Vietnam. Notably, Peruvian avocado imports accounted for 76.26% of China's total avocado imports.

As of now, the official forecast data for Peru's avocado production in 2024 is yet to be released. However, the Peruvian Avocado Association (ProHass) anticipates that current observations indicate a global decline in avocado production in 2024. The climate anomaly caused by the El Niño phenomenon has had a significant impact on the size and harvest of avocados. Not only Peru but also Mexico and Spain are facing production challenges.

Meanwhile, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reported on September 11 that the probability of transitioning from a neutral state to a La Niña state from September to November 2024 is 55%. From October 2024 to February 2025, this probability will increase to 60%. The specific size of avocados also depends on the weather conditions in the coming months.

In the past three months, despite the dominance of the neutral state, large-scale extreme weather events, including extreme high temperatures and destructive precipitation, have occurred globally. Therefore, promoting the implementation of the "United Nations Universal Early Warning Initiative" remains the top priority of the World Meteorological Organization. The seasonal prediction of El Niño and La Niña and the impact assessment of global climate models provide crucial information for "early warning and early action".

For this reason, exogenous substances such as amino acids and betaine play a vital role in enhancing crop resistance. These substances participate in various physiological metabolic processes through different pathways, thereby influencing the growth and development of plants under adverse conditions. With the urgent need for sustainable agricultural development worldwide, exogenous substances, as green and environmentally friendly means of stress resistance and efficiency enhancement, will play an even more significant role in future agricultural production. The application of exogenous substances like glycine betaine can also improve the yield and quality of crops, making positive contributions to food security and the healthy development of the agricultural economy.
